The sculpture park is dotted with incredible sculptures and artwork so take your time as you stroll up to the tower. Within the sculpture park you will also find a Muslim cemetery which is actually really pretty and Monte dos Bicos rock carvings which date back to the Iron Age. Iglesia de San Jorge, or the Church of Saint George, is just a stone’s throw from Maria Pita Square. This beautiful baroque church is striking against the modern architecture that surrounds it.

It’s only a small city but this makes it fairly easy to walk around to some of the main attractions or to easily jump in a cab between the key places. Excavations started in 1947 and so far discovered acres of iron age and Roman fortified settlement. Cidade Vella goes from the Maria Pia square to the arts center and includes its own square, Praza da Constitucion with a fountain and old cannons. When you are here in the winter months it is a great beach for a stroll and in the summer months it transforms into the busiest part of town. As with most coastal cities in Spain, seafood in La Coruna is fresh and plentiful, with local fishermen supplying fresh catch to the city’s restaurants each morning. One of the most popular dishes you’ll find in port is polbo á feira, an octopus dish, cooked in olive oil and spices and usually served with fresh local bread. On warm Spanish days, it’s particularly refreshing when accompanied by an ice-cold Cerveza (beer in Spanish).
With coastal views of the Atlantic Ocean, beaches, and a medieval old town, this city is and has been a key location for navigation routes over the years. As a cruise stop it is ideal, because most attractions are close to the cruise port and as such are walkable. We managed to do most of the activities we had planned within a couple of hours, but there is more we’re eager to do next time.
Wandering the narrow streets of the Old Town, you’ll come across numerous cafes, tapas bars, restaurants, grocery stores, markets. If you’re thinking that you’d prefer to spend your time in La Coruna relaxing, then you’ll be glad to know that there are two beach areas near to La Coruna cruise port, Orzán and Praia de Riazor. Both are about a 15-minute walk from the cruise terminal, and you can head through Maria Pita square to get there. Both beaches are close to each other in a crescent shaped inlet of the city, and they are beautiful, with La Coruna’s urban landscape in the background.
